Ramp up wellness with resistance

What is resistance training and why is it important?

Resistance training increases muscle strength by making your muscles work against a weight or force. Improved muscle strength:

  • protects joints from injury and helps you maintain flexibility and balance, so you remain independent as you age;

  • increases stamina so you won’t tire as easily; and

  • prevents or controls chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression and obesity.

Studies have shown a connection between the use of weights or resistance and the reduction or prevention of cognitive decline. And of course, the reason we all like the best is that with more muscle, your body burns more calories when at rest!

Fortunately, your HTX Nia Team offers two ways to ramp up your routine with resistance “play."

Yvonne’s 9:30 AM Tuesday Nia class now includes optional dancing with a Flexi-bar. Flexi-bars are lightweight, slender flexible tubes that bring elegance to resistance training and muscle conditioning. The bar works by vibrating the often overlooked muscles closest to the bone and provides important core strengthening and sculpting of arms and upper back.

Cambrey’s 9:30 AM Thursday Nia with Weights class blends the use of hand-held weights and floor play for deeper conditioning. Cambrey provides instruction on the proper use of weights to isolate specific muscle groups and improve mobility, balance and posture. Adding weights leads to increased bone density and strength, which can reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Both classes feature signature Nia dance movement and music to uplift and enliven you for the rest of the day! Step into either or both classes and watch your body, mind and spirit become more confident, supple and strong!
