Nia in the Garden - FAQs

Here are some tips to support your visit to Nia in the Garden at Houston Botanic Garden on October 8.

Will this event be held outdoors?

Nia In The Garden will be conducted in an air conditioned tent at Houston Botanic Garden. Following the main portion of the program you will have the option of taking a walk outside to experience the garden in a new way, with fresh eyes.

Who is welcome to attend?

Adults of all fitness levels are welcome to attend Nia in the Garden. However, people who maintain a regular habit of light to moderate exercise or higher will find the event to be the most rewarding. Teachers will be on hand to demonstrate options for movement intensity from low intensity to higher intensity. Everyone will be encouraged to personalize the movement to fit their bodies.

Is the event suitable for children?

We welcome teenagers with an interest in dance-based movement or martial arts who are accompanied by adults.

Will I need a yoga mat?

No, you will not need a yoga mat.

What type of clothing or shoes are needed?

Wear loose fitting clothes that you can easily move in. Nia is typically done barefoot, and the floor is carpeted, however, you are welcome to wear shoes if you prefer. We will provide a final recommendation closer to the event.

What if I can’t do the moves or keep up?

The moves in the routine are uncomplicated, repeated over and over for easy learning, and easily customized to your level of fitness. We recommend taking breaks if needed to enjoy the music before joining back in with the movement. Nia enables you to release and express your unique self without comparison to others.

How long is the program?

The program will run from 2 to 4 p.m. We will send more details to all who register before the event. However, you will want to plan to arrive at least 15-20 minutes early to check in. Also you may want to set aside additional time if you want to explore the gardens more thoroughly before or after the event.

Will you provide a refund if I can’t make it?

All sales are final, per Houston Botanic Garden policy.
